Behold the power of moderate Democrats: From the NYT, the Senate has scrapped the "card check" provision from the Employee Free Choice Act that would have eliminated the secret ballot in unionization elections. This is great news, particularly for workers and businesses, as coerced unionization will not be a threat in the immediate future. The bill will eventually proceed, but in a much pared down format that focuses on shortening union election campaigns and allowing more access for union officials on company grounds. I suspect most business leaders can live with these provisions and the bill will eventually pass, but this is a clear loss for labor.
