Why do some elements of the media underplay successful defensive gun uses?  In this case, it is the Denver Post covering a hostage situation at a medical building and not even mentioning that a doctor with a legal weapon used his gun to cover the escape of most of the hospital, while also pinning down the perpetrator until the police could arrive.  It is almost like they have an agenda or something...

Amidst all the coverage regarding the Supreme Court's decision on the Affordable Care Act, another decision of theirs was overlooked, in United States v. Alvarez.  The court struck down the 2005 Stolen Valor Act, which prohibited false claims about receipt of military medals or decorations.  According to the court, by a 6-3 majority, with Kennedy and Roberts joining the liberal wing, lies of this nature are protected by the First Amendment.  Richard Epstein observes that this decision is not in keeping with the common law origins of the Constitution, which has made prosecutions for misrepresentation and fraud, among other things, increasingly difficult.

Now we have our President (and a smoker!) signing into law a regulation outlawing hand-rolled cigarette operations, which kills jobs while also punishing smokers who don't want the chemical additives in the cigarettes offered by the major tobacco companies. The regulation was lobbied for by the major tobacco companies, put into legislation at the request of a Democrat Senator, and signed into law. But it should bring the government more tax revenue, so I guess we've got that going for us. Apparently that is all that matters.
